The New Year sees new leadership within the Bendigo Basketball community with Joe Hurst appointed as Director of Coaches and Athlete Development, effective January 3rd 2018. In this role, Joe will be responsible for ensuring all coaches, athletes and support staff are equipped with the necessary skills, competence and enthusiasm to be regarded as best in class. The role will oversee all Bendigo Basketball divisions including WNBL, SEABL, Youth League/CBL, Junior Braves and Domestic league, providing for, and enhancing clear pathways.

“Jumping Joe” or “JJ” brings a wealth of playing experience including over 200 conference games with Northwest Missouri State University, where he reflects on being inducted into the Bearcats Sportman’s Hall of Fame as a career highlight, still holding the single-season shot block record almost 30 years later. Hurst commenced his professional career in Australia with the NBL Hobart Devils where he took out the league MVP accolade in 1988, whilst his international career includes playing professionally in Sweden, Croatia, Indonesia and Portugal before returning to Australia in 2001 to join the Canberra Cannons.

Reflecting on his personal experience, Hurst is passionate about “instilling attitudes where athletes and coaches place equal value on enjoying the journey as they pursue their best”, further saying “success is where preparation meets opportunity”, expecting determination, passion, commitment and courage in the wider playing and coaching group. Importantly, Hurst recognizes sport as “…an incredible vehicle where athletes can hone life skills that they will carry long after their sporting careers have ended”.

Supported by his partner Tania who he met soon after arriving in Australia, and proud father to Jasmin, Tremayne and Ahlise, Joe is well-respected and highly regarding in the Bendigo basketball landscape for his dynamic coaching style and love of the game. There is no doubt that Hurst’s ability to engage, inspire and lead will translate to positive outcomes for Bendigo athletes and coaches.
