The best junior teams in Australia will square off against each other in the upcoming 2017 Medibank National Junior Classic.
Held over the Queen’s Birthday long weekend, the best Victorian teams will match it against teams from New South Wales, Australian Capital Territory and South Australia. And for the second time, teams from New Zealand will also be competing.
The Under 14 Girls and Under 16 Girls sides have qualified for the prestigious tournament through their performances in the Victorian Junior Basketball League (VJBL) Victorian Championship (VC) division.
The Nick Salm coached Under 16 Girls are in great form, winning the recent Basketball Victoria Country (BVC) Junior Championship, and will be looking to continue their winning form from VJBL matches, where they sit 2nd on the ladder.
The Under 14 Girls have qualified through their performances in VJBL VC division, where they currently sit 4th on the ladder with an impressive 5-3-1 record.
Charlie Smythe will be looking for back to back titles, after leading the 2016 Under 14 Girls to the championship. Piper Dunlop, Meg McCarthy and Sophie Pica are current members of the Under 16 side, and will also be aiming for back to back titles.
Invitations to the event are given to the highest ranking Victorian teams, and top interstate teams, with only 16 teams per age group granted entry to the invitation only tournament.
Games will be split between the State Basketball Centre and Dandenong over the long weekend, with entry free for all spectators.
